Riley Heidt was drafted by the Minnesota Wild in the 2023 NHL draft with pick No. 64. The 5-foot-10 center recorded 25 goals and 97 points in 68 games for the Prince George Cougars during his draft year.
At the draft, Heidt was projected to be taken in the late first-round pick and was a guy we at THN, had as a probable selection at pick No. 21. The Wild selected Charlie Stramel instead and scooped up Heidt in the second round.
During rookie camp, the prospect showcase, and training camp, Heidt's speed and creativity were on full display. He is a huge offensive threat and even collected two assists in the Wild's first preseason game of the year.
"High-end skill and a really confident demeanor to his game," Iowa Wild head coach Brett McLean said on Heidt during the Tom Kurvers Rookie Showcase. "He's been impressive, no question."
But after one game of preseason action, the Wild sent Heidt back to the WHL with the Prince George Cougars, and in his first game of the season, he played incredible.
Heidt recorded two goals and five points in the Cougars' 11-2 win over the Victoria Royals. The 18-year-old center is someone to keep an eye on as he continues to grow. He could grow into a No. 1 center at the NHL level which is something the Wild would love.
