The plan all along was for the Wild to play their normal starters for three full preseason games and play the whole team and projected opening night lineup for the last two preseason games.

This was a plan to avoid what happened last year. The Wild opened the season with two quick losses 7-4 against the New York Rangers and 7-6 against the Los Angeles Kings.

So the Wild brought their whole team to Chicago to play in preseason game number five. But Spurgeon ended up leaving early after taking a hit by Reece Johnson in the first period.

The Wild captain did not return for the rest of the game. Wild head coach Dean Evason said to reporters after the game, "It's not positive but we'll get a better evaluation tomorrow."

It would be a big loss for the Wild if they were to lose their captain to start the season but we will have an update here later today on Spurgeon's status.
