The Montreal Canadiens defenseman had important role in Canada's win against Austria at the World Championship tournament.
The 2024 IIHF Tournament featured on Tuesday an exciting contest between Canada and Austria at Prague Arena with the Montreal Canadiens represented by Kaiden Guhle and Vinzenz Rohrer.
After Juraj Slafkovsky earned bragging rights over Cole Caufield following Slovakia's win against the United States on Monday, Guhle got the slight edge over Rohrer.
Team Canada held a dominating 6-1 lead through 40 minutes when Austria fired back with five consecutive goals in the third period to force overtime. John Tavares stopped the bleeding with the game winner 15 seconds into the extra frame.
Guhle was named his country's best player of the match by collecting two points, three shots on goal and minus-1 with 17:25 of ice time.
It began 6:34 after puck drop when Guhle passed the puck to Andrew Mangiapane in the slot when he found Dylan Cozens between the faceoff circles for the goal.
The Canadiens defenseman doubled Canada's lead less than three minutes later when Tavares fed him for a one-timer from the faceoff dot for his first of the tournament.
With four points in three games, Guhle is in a four-way tie for third leading scorer for defensemen behind Switzerland's Roman Josi (6 points) and Sweden's Erik Karlsson (5 points).
On his end, Rohrer was held off the scoresheet with minus-4 in 12:18 of action. The forward selected 75th overall in 2022 has obtained two points in three matches.
On Wednesday, Juraj Slafkovsky is the only Canadiens representative in action as Slovakia faces Poland at Ostrava Arena. Puck drop is at 2:20pm eastern time and will be broadcasted on TSN4 in Canada.
