The 2024 IIHF World Championships resumed on Saturday with two semifinals to determine the two countries that will battle for gold medal. Kaiden Guhle is the only Montreal Canadiens representative active in the competition.
Switzerland led 2-0 through 20 minutes by capitalizing on two power play opportunities. Canada answered back in the second period with a goal by Brandon Tanev and with 2:07 remaining in regulation, John Tavares forced overtime with a goal with the man advantage.
During the 10-minute overtime, the Canadians killed off a too many players on the ice penalty to remain alive. The teams needed a shootout to determine a winner and former Canadien Sven Andrighetto ended Andre Tourigny's club hopes of a gold medal with the determing goal in the fourth round of shootouts.
Andrighetto dressed for 83 games with the Canadiens in a span of three seasons before being traded to the Colorado Avalanche for Andreas Martinsen on March 1st, 2017.
Guhle was on the ice for 19:33 in Canada's 3-2 shootout loss on Saturday and took three shots on goal.
In the other semifinal, Czechia easily defeated Sweden 7-3 at Prague arena.
The competition wraps up on Sunday with Canada facing Sweden at 9:20 am. Eastern time for bronze medal and Switzerland battles Czechia for gold medal at 2:20 pm. Eastern. Both games will be played at Prague arena and will be broadcast on TSN 1 in Canada.
