Game Report

The Montreal Canadiens losing streak extended to three games following a 2-1 overtime loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.

Joshua Roy took his rookie lap around the Bell Centre ice as he made his NHL debut following his recall on Friday from Laval. The 20-year old replaced Josh Anderson in the lineup after being ruled out with a lower body injury.

The Canadiens capitalized on their first power play opportunity when Nick Suzuki found Cole Caufield at his office with a cross-ice pass. Caufield quickly put the puck at the back of the net.

After an uneventful second period, the play opened up in the third period. The Oilers struck early in the frame when Leon Draisaitl tapped in the puck in a small opening that Sam Montembeault left between his pad and the post. Martin St. Louis decided to challenge the call, and the officials upheld the call after review.

Edmonton dominated the rest of the period outshooting Montreal 20-8 in the final 20 minutes.

The penalty kill was tested late in the third with Brendan Gallagher in the box and the units prevented their opponents from converting.

The Oilers got another power play opportunity in the overtime when Mike Matheson took a high sticking infraction and Evan Bouchard's one-timer from the blue line hit the post then Montembeault's back before crossing the red line.

The coach said in the morning that there's no place he'd rather be on a Saturday night at the Bell Centre and the Canadiens have shown that this year with 6-0-2 record at home on Saturdays.

The pairing of Matheson and Kaiden Guhle were assigned the task to cover Connor McDavid and they kept the star forward to two shots on goals in 25:36 of ice time.

St. Louis played Roy on a consistent basis throughout the night including late into the game when the score was tied. The rookie finished the contest with 13:03 ice time, one shot attempt and three blocked shots.

Post-game Quotes

Martin St. Louis

"I think we did a good job dealing with McDavid's speed. Matheson and Guhle cover a lot of ice helped us, but our forwards also helped us deal with his speed. We didn't give him a lot of room to breathe."

Joshua Roy on rookie lap

"All I wanted to do is not miss my first shot. I was a little bit stressed but it went well and I'm really happy."
