Lane Hutson is only 20 years old but is one of the best prospects the Montreal Canadiens have in their lineup. Here's five things to know.

Lane Hutson can potentially be a Calder and Norris winner with the Montreal Canadiens. Despite his size, he's a highly skilled and exciting defenseman to watch.
Whether patrolling the blue line, breaking up plays in his own end, or searching for seams to thread passes to teammates, Hutson has already built an impressive resume in the NCAA, USHL, and with the USNTDP.
Let's dig deeper and get to know the young Canadiens defenseman as he begins to build his legacy in Montreal.
Hutson was born on Valentine's Day, 2004, in Hollan, Michigan. When he debuted with the Canadiens on Apr. 15, 2024, he became the 12th player from Michigan to play with the Canadiens.
He joins Jeff Petry, James Wisniewski, Greg Pateryn, Jim Cummins, Michael McCarron, Corey Schueneman, Aaron Palushaj, Zach Redmond, Bill Baker, Drayson Bowman, and his current teammate, Cayden Primeau.
Petry leads all Michigan-born skaters with 248 points, followed by Wisniewski (30) and Pateryn (13). If Hutson continues at a point-per-game pace, he'll become the second-highest scorer from the state by the end of the 2024-25 season.
Lane is the oldest of three brothers in his family and became the first to be drafted in 2022 at 62nd overall. Despite his impressive career in the USHL and NCAA, Lane's brother Cole was recently drafted higher, 43rd overall by the Washington Capitals in 2024.
During his one season with the USNTDP, Lane had 32 points in 27 games, while Cole was a point-per-game player last year, netting 51 points in 51 games as the team's highest-scoring defenseman. Like Lane, Cole is now skating with Boston University, marking the third consecutive year a Hutson has played for the Terriers.
A season before former first overall pick Macklin Celebrini would skate at Boston University and win the Hobey Baker Award as the best NCAA hockey player, Hutson was the Terriers leading scorer as a freshman.

During the 2022-23 season, the 18-year-old defenseman scored 15 goals and 33 assists for 48 points, beating out Matt Brown for the team's scoring title by a single point. Hutson had the third most goals, led the team in assists, and ranked first at plus-25.
Hutson finished seventh in NCAA scoring, three spots behind another Canadiens prospect, Sean Farrell, who had 53 points for Harvard that season. Columbus Blue Jackets forward Adam Fantilli led the league in scoring with 65 points.
Hutson made his NHL debut against the Detroit Red Wings and picked up an assist on a Brendan Gallagher goal. The next night, in a rematch with the Red Wings, he set up a Juraj Slafkovsky goal to finish his first two games with two points.
In 2024-25, Hutson picked up where he left off. After a pointless season-opening debut against the Toronto Maple Leafs, he made up for it by setting up two goals the next night against the Boston Bruins.
For the second season in a row, his first point came on a Gallagher goal, followed by a helper on a Cole Caufield lamplighter. Hutson's first career points thus far have come against Original Six franchises.
Hutson made his World Junior debut with the United States U18 team in 2021, collecting five assists in five games while finishing fifth in the tournament. However, he had eight helpers in six games the following season to win a silver medal at the tournament.

Hutson advanced to the U20 team for the 2023 World Junior Championship, scoring his first goal and winning a bronze medal. The following year, he would win a gold medal as the United States defeated Sweden at the 2024 event.
After a brilliant junior career, Hutson made his senior debut with the United States, skating at the 2023 World Championships. He registered two goals and six points in nine games.
