On Wednesday night, the Montreal Canadiens took their fans on a rollercoaster ride. Before the end of the first frame, they fell behind the Seattle Kraken 2-0. Then, they bounced back to take a 4-2 lead, and it looked like they may pull off the win until the host scored a couple of power-play goals to bring everyone back to square one. Ultimately, the locals won after five seconds of overtime play.
However, before all this happened, before the puck was even dropped on the game, the Kraken organisation got another big win. Not everyone likes the tradition of the national anthems being sung before the start of the game, especially not lately with the trade war opposing Canada and the United States.
Lately, we’ve heard the American anthem being booed in numerous Canadian venues, and we’ve seen the Bell Centre get in on the action as the political climate gets increasingly tense. What we haven’t seen, however, is positivity amongst the sea of negativity that flows on our TVs as soon as we turn on the news.
It wasn’t shown on TV, at least not on RDS’ broadcast, but on Wednesday, the Canadian anthem was played on a cello in Seattle, and the crowd was asked to participate. With the words written on the jumbotron, the Kraken fans proceeded to sing the Canadian anthem in both French and English, and they did.
It was a beautiful rendition and a fantastic reminder that our neighbours to the south still appreciate their Canadian neighbours, despite what’s happening on the political stage. I think it’s worth giving credit where credit is due. Good job, Seattle, and thank you.
