Jacob Fowler got valuable big game experience at TD Garden.

Jacob Fowler is having a “Richter Award” type of season. Goaltending has ups and downs and that’s what the Canadiens prospect experienced at TD Garden at the Beanpot.

Northeastern was the defending champs and Boston College behind Fowler ended their reign in an 8-2 win in the semifinal. Fowler stopped 28 shots and BC was looking good heading into the final. It was so far, so good and no reason to expect anything to the contrary.

Hockey is a team game. Fowler made 40 saves on 43 shots in a 4-1 final loss. Two of these goals were indefensible for any goalie. On the first goal, Gabe Perreault did a blind drop pass that turned into a 2-on-1. I am the type of person who believes goalies can’t give up in that situation and he didn’t. The goal was scored high in the corner. There wasn’t much to shoot at.

The next goal came 1:10 later when Cole Hutson, fired up by Lane’s pre-game locker room visit to rally the team, picked out a small short-side hole over Fowler’s right shoulder. Again, a goal that would go in at the NHL level.

Fowler doesn’t give up easy goals. His goals-against average is 1.72 with a .936 save percentage. Boston College’s defense turned into a hot mess and the game got very sloppy quickly. It happens but it’s a learning experience. Fowler has done a lot of winning in his young career and this loss should fuel him to try and win a National Championship later this season.
