When Montreal Canadiens’ blueliner Lane Hutson met the media remotely after being announced as the Calder Trophy winner, he did it from an arena. Even though it’s Summer, the diminutive defenseman is a hockey junkie and seems to take very little time off, and even less so in the offseason.
Last weekend, pictures of him attending the Bauer Hockey Camp with his brothers Cole and Quinn appeared on social media. While we’re far from the six brothers of the Sutter family (Brent, Brian, Darryl, Duane, Rich, and Ron ) who all played pro hockey in the 1980s, it’s still impressive to see one family produce three NHLers.

With the Canadiens, Lane has shown himself to be an absolute force in the league. Meanwhile, Quinn went undrafted in 2020, 2021, and 2022, but he signed an ELC contract with the Edmonton Oilers last April after playing three years with Boston University. He burnt the first year of that contract playing two games at the tail end of the season, but the right winger was unable to get on the scoresheet.
As for Cole, he is a defenseman and was drafted 43rd overall by the Washington Capitals at last year’s draft. Many expect him to be even better than his older brother Lane, but until he shows what he can do in professional hockey, that remains pure speculation. He’s five-foot-10 and 172 pounds and played his first year of NCAA hockey last season, recording 48 points in just 39 games.
Since he’ll be playing a second NCAA season this upcoming season, he has yet to be signed to an ELC by the Caps, but there’s no doubt he will be once he’s ready to make the jump to pro hockey. He made the headlines in April for being seen in Montreal, wearing the Canadiens’ colours to cheer on Lane in his playoff series against the Capitals.
