Ivan Demidov was named the rookie of the month for September in the KHL, but Roman Rottenberg doesn't care.

Montreal Canadiens' prospect Ivan Demidov is having a tough time with coach Roman Rottenberg these days. The fifth overall pick at the latest draft was crowned rookie of the month for September in the KHL with eight points in 10 games, but the SKA St-Petersburg's coach won't let the honour dictate the rookie's ice time.

Once again yesterday, the youngster was used on the fourth line. While he saw 5:16 of ice time in the first period, he only hit the ice for 15 seconds in the middle frame and was nailed to the bench for the final stanza.

In an interview with Russian media, Match TV, Rottenberg was asked why Demidov disappeared during the game, and he replied:

Could the young forward indeed be nursing an injury? That seems weird since no one has seen him get injured. Could it be that the club would like him to sign a contract extension, and he has declined? It's hard to say, and it's pure speculation right now, but if the lines of communication are indeed open between the Russian club and the Habs, let's hope the Canadiens have enquired about the situation.

Still, SKA skated away with a 4-3 overtime win over league leaders Lokomotiv. Rottenberg's men will hit the ice next Thursday, taking on Dinamo Minsk. Watch this space to see if Demidov plays a more prominent role.
