Maybe Max Domi felt left out because everyone was talking about Max Pacioretty wearing the Toronto Maple Leafs jersey when they came to town to take on the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night, or maybe his wires got crossed. Still, for whatever reason, he decided to take on David Savard.
The Leafs' agitator tried his best to get the veteran to drop the gloves, but the savvy (which is, incidentally, Savard's nickname on the team) vet declined and let Domi take the walk of shame to the penalty box alone. Not without giving Savard an earful, though.
Since the Leaf wanted attention, Savard obliged by giving him a big hit, after which he ended up sitting on the ice like a kid who had just lost his balance or was refusing to move because his father wouldn't buy him some candy at the store.
According to Renaud Lavoie on BPM Sports today, Domi did not take kindly to the hit and came near the Canadiens' bench during a commercial and told Savard: "Come on man, let's settle this, let's go." He didn't get the reaction he hoped for, though. Instead of Savard, Arber Xhekaj leaned in, looked at Domi, and said: "You really want to go? Alright, I'll go." And Domi skated away. Lavoie added I'm not saying Domi is scared of Xhekaj, but that was the end of it.
How does Lavoie know? Well, TVA Sports carried the home opener, and Lavoie was the analyst standing between the two teams' benches with the best view of the house.
