On an episode of the Morning Club on BPM Sports, Gilbert Delorme spoke on golfing with Laval Rocket head coach Pascal Vincent and his experience coaching Patrik Laine
While the 10:55 a.m. timeslot on BPM Sports this morning was filled with host Tony Marinaro interviewing Montreal Canadiens GM Kent Hughes, an earlier segment on the station provided an interesting piece of information regarding Patrik Laine.
On the episode of the Morning Club, host Gilbert Delorme revealed that he golfed with Laval Rocket head coach Pascal Vincent and the two talked about the Finnish acquisition:
“What [Vincent] said, that caught my attention, he has been coaching for a long time, [Laine] is the most talented player he has coached,” Delorme recounted in French.
Delorme and co-host Max Lalonde added their input on the forward, saying that the Finn can do whatever he pleases with the puck, has a big stride, and has extraordinary shooting hands.
Vincent was a member of the Jets organization from 2011-'2021, spending five years as Winnipeg’s assistant coach and five as the head coach of the AHL affiliate Manitoba Moose. He also coached Laine last year while behind the bench for Columbus. It’s still unclear if the Canadiens reached out to their new AHL hire about Laine.
“Clearly, in Winnipeg, we know that there have been cancers in the locker room,” Delorme said.
The Finn played only 18 regular season games last season before entering into the NHL/NHLPA Players Assistance Program. He exited the program this Summer and told Montreal media members that he is trying to turn over a new leaf. The BPM hosts lent insight into what could help the attacker in La Belle Province:
“If the crowd is behind [Laine], if the public loves him, if everyone... You know, applauds him, then the support, then the shoulder, in all of this, I may be naive, but I have the impression that we may be seeing a completely different person.”
There is some truth to this statement. Coach Martin St Louis has a sound approach with players, taking them as they are when they arrive in Montreal.
That being said, it’s a hockey city and fans plus media alike demand good performance from high-profile athletes. Hughes has stated that Laine doesn’t have to be a 40-goal scorer for the deal to be a success. Time will tell if that truly is the case.
