Shea Weber wasn't the only person part of the Montreal Canadiens' history to be inducted in the Hockey Hall of Fame last week, the voice of the Habs on French speaking sports network RDS Pierre Houde also was.
If the Canadiens know how to honor someone on the ice, they know how to do it off the ice as well. The members of the media had been invited to the Jacques Beauchamp salon for 5:30 PM, well in advance of the 7:30 PM puck drop.
Everyone was treated to a special edition Molson beer bearing Houde's picture, and Chantal Machabee and France Margaret Belanger said a few words about the man of the hour. From his beginnings on radio, to his hiring with RDS and his description of over 3,500 hockey games, Houde is as deserving as can be of the honor he received last week.
To commemorate his success, the Canadiens added his picture to the member of the media wall of fame and they offered him some touching gifts. First, as he is celebrating his 50th anniversary in the business, he received a number 50 jersey autographed by the team, then he was also given some scotch glass and finally, a Guy Lafleur bottle of gin autographed by the man himself.
It was a well-deserved celebration of a man who has been in Quebecers' houses for 50 years now, the Stanley Cups, the playoffs eliminations, the bad trades, the good trades, he's helped us through it all. Congratulations Mr. Houde and here's to another 50 years, cheers!
