Viewers will get behind-the-scenes access to the Montreal Canadiens and some of the league's top stars in two separate docuseries to premiere this year.

It's no secret that the Netflix series Drive to Survive has done wonders for Formula 1, increasing the sports global fanbase, viewers, and merchandise sales. Other sports have since hopped on board the trend, such as golf and tennis, and now the NHL will join the fray.

But this concept isn't new to the Montreal Canadiens and their fans; the franchise has produced a number of limited series over the years, giving fans an inside look at their favorite team and players.

Canadiens Fans Get A Series Of Their Own

That tradition continues this year, with Crave announcing the premiere of The Rebuild: Inside the Montreal Canadiens set to debut later this year. The series, made up of eight one-hour episodes, follows the Habs throughout the 2023-24 season, documenting the team's latest progression through their rebuild from players, staff, coaches, and executives.

“From the dressing room to the board room, cameras capture a never-before-seen look at the inner workings of our organization. Real stories about our players, members of management, and staff are showcased. We are proud to be partnering with Bell Media and Groupe Fair-Play on this project, and are excited to unveil this exciting series to Canadians when it launches later this year," says France Margaret Bélanger, President, Sports and Entertainment, Groupe CH.

The series will be presented in both French and English, with French narration by Marc-André Grondin and English narration by George Stroumboulopoulos. A release date has not yet been announced, but will be available on the Crave streaming service later in 2024.

NHL Docuseries To Appear On Prime Video

As for the NHL, Prime Video recently announced a collaboration with NHL Productions and Box to Box Films, the company responsible for creating F1's Drive To Survive, to create a yet-to-be-named video series in the same style as the popular racing production.

Cameras followed a number of NHL stars throughout the 2023-24 season, and continue to film throughout the Stanley Cup Final, to give viewers an up-close look at life on and off the ice.

Paul Martin, co-founder of Box To Box Films and Executive Producer, explained, “We want to stay true to the world of ice hockey with the series. The sport is as beautiful, skillful and graceful, as it is brutal, pressurized and powerful; and we aim to balance the energetic and fast-paced action leading up to the Stanley Cup Final, with the quiet and raw drama taking place off the ice."

Shaun Alperin, the head of content for Prime Video, Canada, has a similar perspective. “This generation of NHL superstars are modern day gladiators unlike anything ever seen before, with big personalities and even bigger play makers, and we have the perfect partners to capture that energy for an unparalleled sports docuseries."
