Montreal Canadiens’ power play specialist Patrik Laine is done with hockey for this season. According to the Journal de Montreal report, the big Finn has turned off his television and is not watching any playoff action.

Still, according to the same report, Laine and fiancée Jordan Leigh intend to spend the Summer in town. They’ll be leaving briefly in about a month to get married in Florida, but aside from that, they want to discover their new hometown in the Summer.

Laine will, of course, be training this offseason as well, but he plans on enjoying the shows, the restaurants, and, of course, the Formula One Grand Prix, which is scheduled for June 13 to 15. Like many Europeans, he also enjoys soccer and plans to attend a CF Montreal or a Roses’ game or both.
While some fans weren’t impressed with Laine’s defensive shortcomings or even-strength game, he genuinely enjoyed his first season in Montreal. The fact that he’s decided to spend the Summer in town is also a positive indicator. At the end of the season, his fiancée took to Instagram to thank the Canadiens’ fans for making her man love hockey again.
When training camp opens, Laine will start his four-year pact's fourth and final year. His $8.7 M cap hit makes him the Canadiens’ best-paid player, for now, but chances are Lane Hutson’s first standard contract will fetch him more than that. Should Laine want to sign an extension with Montreal, he’d likely have to take a pay cut unless, of course, he has an incredible contract year.
While talking about a new contract now can seem premature, Laine is a very talented player, and if he were to want to stick around, the Canadiens would do well to entertain the idea, especially if he keeps showing a willingness to learn and improve, something he’s impressed Kent Hughes with this season.
