Athletes dabbling in the arts is nothing new. Some express themselves through fashion, others through music careers. For Canadiens prospect Bogdan Konyushkov, it’s a love of theatre.
A post from Konyshkov’s Instagram from May 16 has floated around the internet and made its way to Habs Reddit. In the post, the defenseman is seen posing outside the Nizhny Novgorod Drama Theatre following a performance of the play Macbeth.

In the post, Konyushkov writes in Russian “This is not surprising, because I love the theatre and whenever possible I always go there. Yesterday, I was at the Nizhny Novgorod Drama Theatre for a production of Macbeth and I give the performance a 10 out of 10.”
The young Russian continues by saying the theatre is an outlet where he can dress nicely and broaden his horizons by talking to people about non-sports topics.
What became interesting was the last few paragraphs of the post, where Konyushkov likens theatre to hockey.
“...last season we at Torpedo often talked about ‘hockey theatre.’ Actors also have their own team (troupe), they train (rehearse), they have games (performances)... Theatre is closer to me even more than cinema, because there, like in hockey, you don’t have a second chance… Either you realize the moment right now or you don’t. You either fall into people’s hearts or you disappoint.”
In the far distant future, when Konyushkov hangs up his skates, it would be interesting to see this passion translated into an investment in the performing arts. Until then, he is open to talking to performers about the ins and outs.
