There is a lot to like about Oliver Kapanen's game. Could he hit a new level in 2026-27?
The Montreal Canadiens took another big step forward in 2025-26. One of the many reasons for it was forward Oliver Kapanen, as he had a strong rookie season.
Kapanen cemented himself as a solid part of the Canadiens' forward group last season. In 82 games for the Original Six club, he posted 22 goals, 15 assists, and 37 points. With numbers like these, the 2021 second-round pick undoubtedly showed plenty of promise as a rookie.
Yet, when noting that Kapanen is just getting his career started, it would not be surprising if he took another step forward in his development next season. He is now more adjusted to the NHL level after finishing his rookie season, and it will be interesting to see how he performs next season because of it.
If Kapanen can improve his offensive totals while continuing to grow his two-way play, it would be significant for a Canadiens club that is on the rise. Given how well he played for the Habs as a rookie this year, it is hard not to feel optimistic about his future with the club.
It will now be intriguing to see how much of an impact Kapanen makes next season for the Canadiens from here.
