Patrick Roy found out his general manager, Lou Lamoriello’s contract is running out and there will be a change at the helm. John Collins, the man behind many of the Winter Classics, is leading the search committee.
The New York Islanders are going to let the new general manager evaluate the coaching staff. What about bringing in Marc Bergevin for an interview? He is currently the Los Angeles Kings senior advisor to the general manager. So, the Kings would have to grant permission but the potential position would be an upgrade and I doubt the Kings would hold him back if he had interest in interviewing for the position.
As far as Roy goes, I feel like he did as good a job as he could do with the flawed roster that the Islanders had. He was honest to himself, the players, and he gave it his all. There was just no way to turn that roster into a playoff team.
Roy and Bergevin are buddies and I could see these guys working around the clock to improve the Islanders. Bergevin has a lot of positives. I’ve spoken to him more than a few times and I think he can be a smooth operator. All general managers make mistakes but I have to believe he learned from them.
Let’s see how this develops. This could be a fun situation for Canadiens’ fans to keep an eye on. If this pairing happens, I would expect it to get a lot of coverage in Montreal.
