Former Montreal Canadiens defenseman Josh Gorges has landed a new job, as he has been hired as an assistant coach by the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League (WHL).
Gorges is certainly somebody the Rockets know well, as he spent his four-year junior career as a member of the club. He also served as their captain during his final season with the club during the 2003-04 campaign. Now, Gorges will be behind Kelowna's bench as an assistant coach.
Gorges spent eight of his 13 NHL seasons as a member of the Canadiens, where he was a key part of their blueline. In 464 career games with the Canadiens over that span, he recorded 13 goals, 75 assists, 88 points, 606 hits, 1.042 blocks, and a plus-34 rating.
When noting that Gorges had a long NHL career as a steady shutdown defenseman, he could end up being a very good coach for Kelowna. This will be an excellent opportunity for him to gain some more experience behind the bench, and he gets to do with a junior team that he previously played, which is a nice bonus.
Canadiens Young Star Should Hit New Level
There is no question that forward Juraj Slafkovsky is one of the <a href="https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/montreal-canadiens">Montreal Canadiens</a>' core pieces moving forward. The 2022 first-overall pick has already emerged as a key forward in their lineup, and this certainly remained the case during the 2024-25 season.
