    Hughes to be Aggressive?

According to Pierre LeBrun, fans of the Montreal Canadiens can expect Kent Hughes to aggressively pursue top players when the free agent market opens on July 1st. LeBrun reports that Hughes will look to sign high-value players to two-year deals as he takes advantage of the salary cap bump.

It goes without saying that short-term contracts may not be appealing to many of the unrestricted free agents.

    Necas List Narrowed

Pierre LeBrun also reported that the Carolina Hurricanes have thinned their list of suitors for the services of forward Martin Necas to five to seven teams. While LeBrun reports that the Canadiens have indicated their interest in Necas, it's not known whether Montreal is considered a finalist.

Elliotte Friedman reported that the Hurricanes are looking for a return of player exhibiting star power.

    Laine Seeking a Trade

It was Lebrun again who indicated that the Columbus Blue Jackets have been asked by Patrik Laine's agent for a trade. The 26-year-old forward is looking for "a fresh start with a new team."

Currently Laine is part of the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program and has two-years remaining on his contract with an $8.7 million cap hit. He is expected to be ready to start the 2024-25 season.

Laine is coming off a season where he played just 18 games, recording six goals, three assists for nine points. His recent struggles should lower the acquisition price for the second overall pick of the 2016 NHL Draft.
