The 2024-25 season was a bit of a rough one for Montreal Canadiens forward Alex Newhook. His pace of production was noticeably lower, as he posted 15 goals, 11 assists, 26 points, and a minus-21 rating in 82 games.
While Newhook struggled offensively this past season with the Canadiens, there is certainly a real possibility that he can turn things back around in 2025-26.
When looking at the season Newhook just had back in 2023-24, he has the potential to be a more significant offensive contributor. During that season, he had 15 goals, 19 assists, and 34 points, but in only 55 contests. With that, he was on pace to finish that campaign with 22 goals, 28 assists, 50 points, had he stayed healthy for the Canadiens' full 82-game schedule in 2023-24.
With production like this, Newhook does have some offensive skill, and he will look to replicate this form in 2025-26. If he does, he could emerge as a real answer for the Canadiens' top six, which would be massive for a Habs team on the rise.
Canadiens: Another Solution For the Second Center Conundrum?
Kent Hughes has had an active Summer so far. Before the draft, he acquired Noah Dobson from the New York Islanders to address one of the Montreal Canadiens’ pressing needs. While some were arguing that Logan Mailloux could fill the void left by David Savard’s retirement, the GM wanted a proven commodity to strengthen his lineup. Additionally, his decision to trade Mailloux might have already been made. The young defenseman was sacrificed to acquire some help up front in Zachary Bolduc from the St. Louis Blues, a 22-year-old with scoring upside.
Nevertheless, it is going to be very interesting to see what kind of season Newhook puts together from here. With the 2019 first-round already having past success and still being only 24 years old, the prospect of him bouncing back or even hitting a new level is still there.
Canadiens Get Big Praise For Great Off-Season
After taking a big step in the right direction last season, the Montreal Canadiens have been very busy this off-season. Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes has undoubtedly been aggressive this off-season, as he made several notable roster moves.
