One day ahead of the NHL trade deadline, Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes made a minor move acquiring forward Jacob Perreault from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for forward Jan Mysak.
Perreault has spent the entire season in the AHL, scoring seven goals and 11 assists for 18 points in 31 games for the San Diego Gulls.
In 161 AHL games over four seasons, the 21-year-old has recorded 32 goals, and 59 assists for 91 points. Perreault has played one game in the NHL with the Anaheim Ducks during the 2021-22 season.
Perreault was selected in the first round of the 2020 NHL Draft, 27th overall. Since turning pro, he has failed to live up to his first round billing.
The Ducks have shown patience with Perreault respecting his NHL-calibre shot, being both heavy and accurate. But his lack of consistent engagement, his play away from the puck and injury issues have prevented him from taking the next step beyond the AHL.
Mysak was selected in the second round of 2020 NHL Draft, 48th overall. This has been his best season with the Laval Rocket scoring 13 goals and seven assists for 20 points in 48 games
A fierce forechecker, Mysak prides his game on work ethic and hockey sense. Scott Wheeler of The Athletic described Mysak writing, "I’ve seen an impressive player who works hard, has plenty of skill, and looks to me like a better prospect and player than his numbers in the three seasons since he was selected indicate."
In Laval, Mysak was limited by head coach J.F. Houle but performed well when given an opportunity.
For both players, perhaps a change of team will help them reach their potential. Perreault will wear number 34 for the Laval Rocket.
