The key to this draft is to get some players who will compliment the young core players that will be in a contending mode. That’s the key to this draft. The Canadiens can try and hit a few home runs but early on look to get NHL talent who can compliment your future stars. It’s going to be hard to get a future star from this slot.
Spence is a 6’2”, physically mature left wing. There’s a chance that he’s gone before the Canadiens pick and if they want him and feel that’s their guy, then you trade up and get him. They have 12 picks in the draft so they will have a lot of autonomy in this draft and that gives you some power too.
Back to Spence. He is defensively responsible and according to InStat had 24% d-zone starts. The fact that he plays on the power play and penalty kill makes him more valuable.
The fact that he has won 48% of his puck battles is good and that will improve as he gets even stronger.. I love the fact that he will do anything to make a play. Spence displays hard work behind the net and dishes with accuracy.
Dangerous in the crease area. He has a pro shot already. When you have a player of his size and abilities he will eventually draw interest in this draft.
He could add to his resume at the 2025 NHL Combine, I’m guessing he will impress teams in interviews and the other testing.
