Early on Tuesday, the Montreal Canadiens announced the signing of a one-year contract extension for forward Sean Monahan, valued at $1.985 million. The 28-year-old played 25 games for the Habs last year (six goals, 11 assists), after being traded by the Calgary Flames to Montreal in August 2022 in exchange for future considerations. A conditional 2025 first-round draft pick was also part of the deal coming back from Calgary.

Monahan, formerly a perennial 20-plus goals-per-year scorer, was drafted sixth overall by the Flames in 2013. He spent nine years with the organization, amassing 212 goals and 250 assists, while wearing an 'A' on his sweater for seven of those seasons. His leadership skills date back to junior hockey when Monahan captained the Ottawa 67's in the 2012-13 season. The Brampton, Ontario native was also a Lady Byng Memorial Trophy finalist in the 2018-19 season.

Despite what seemed to be a rejuvenation of his game upon coming to the Canadiens, the 6-foot-2, 196-pound center encountered a new setback when he injured his foot in December 2022. During the rehabilitation process, Monahan suffered a groin injury, effectively putting him out of commission for the remainder of the season and eventually leading to surgery in early April.

A new contract at this stage seems to indicate Monahan is once again healthy and ready for the upcoming season. If the 28-year-old stays healthy, he will earn a $15,000 bonus for playing 26 games bringing the contract total to $2 million. The signing comes just under two weeks before he was slated to become an unrestricted free agent.
