Mike Matheson has been fined for roughing by NHL Player Safety.
With the 2026-27 regular-season almost here, one of the Montreal Canadiens' key players has already received a punishment from NHL Player Safety.
NHL Player Safety has announced that Canadiens defenseman Mike Matheson has been fined $5,000 for roughing Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig in their recent pre-season matchup.
This is the highest fine that Matheson could have received for roughing under the current CBA.
After Greig cross-checked Matheson in the face, the Canadiens blueliner responded by punching the Senators forward twice in the head.
Greig did not receive any discipline from NHL Player Safety for his cross-check to the head on Matheson.
Matheson appeared in 78 games last season for the Habs, where he recorded seven goals, 37 points, and a plus-9 rating.
