Amazon Prime Video, Rogers Communications and the National Hockey League (NHL) announced a two-year agreement that will feature all national regular season Monday NHL games be exclusively streamed on Amazon Prime Video in Canada as of the 2024-25 season. Hockey fans in Canada to watch those games will be through a Prime subscription as they will no longer air on Sportsnet.
“We’re committed to driving more innovation for fans as we bring the NHL into more Canadian homes and across more devices on Monday nights than ever before. We’re thrilled to be offering Prime Monday Night Hockey as part of our one-stop entertainment destination, which includes add-on channels like Sportsnet for even more hockey and sports content, the latest movies to rent or buy, popular and award-winning Amazon Originals to stream with Prime, and so much more,” said Magda Grace, head of Prime Video, Canada, Australia and New Zealand in a press release.
The impact to Canadiens fans varies whether you’re located in the Canadiens viewing region or outside. The team’s region is in Quebec, Atlantic Canada, and from the Ottawa valley east in Ontario.
Inside the designated area, the Monday national games will be available in French to RDS subscribers. Outside the region, Prime Video will be required as the RDS broadcast will be blacked out. During the 2023-24 season, the Canadiens had five Monday national games.
The NHL is following in the foot steps of the National Football League (NFL) and Major League Soccer (MLS) with a portion of their broadcast rights transferred to a streaming platform. Amazon is the exclusive broadcaster of the NFL’s Thursday Night Football in the United States and Apple TV is the MLS’s primary broadcast partner.
When Rogers’ current 12-year broadcast deal expires at the conclusion of the 2025-26 season, it is expected that streaming platforms have a bigger piece of the national games in Canada.
