The Dallas Stars are shopping Jason Robertson, and one can wonder if it would be a good idea for the Montreal Canadiens to get in touch with the Stars to see if a deal could be made. At 25 years old, Robertson is the same age as Habs captain Nick Suzuki and would fit with the timeline.

The left winger hasn’t missed a single game in the last three seasons and put up 109 points in 2022-23 and 80 points over the previous two seasons. He will be entering the last year of his four-year contract worth $7.750 million per season. Given the fact that the Stars already have five players earning over $8 M per season, it’s quite conceivable that they don’t believe they’ll have the cap space necessary to sign him to a new contract at the end of the season when he’ll be an RFA with arbitration rights.

Canadiens: Could The Devils Have What The Canadiens Need?

Would Robertson improve the Canadiens’ top six? Absolutely. Is he what the Canadiens need right now? Unfortunately, not. It’s been repeated time and time that Montreal’s most pressing needs are to find a second-line center and a right-shot defenseman, and that’s likely where Kent Hughes will invest his time and energy.

If Hughes cannot find a way to address those needs and Robertson is still available, though, he wouldn’t be a bad option at all, especially if the price tag is reasonable, which it could be with a contract that’s soon running out. Chances are, there will be a lot of competition to land Robertson. However, this is not a Patrik Laine kind of situation.

The Stars’ winger is a much more complete player than the Finnish sniper; he works hard at both ends of the ice and has never had a rating lower than plus-10. He’s also a proven goal scorer, having scored more than 40 goals in a season twice in his career and notched another 35 goals last season.

Could the Canadiens have the goods to pique Dallas’ interest? Who knows, it really depends on what they’re in the market for, but if the move is motivated by monetary reasons, perhaps they wouldn’t be opposed to futures.

Jim Nill had to sacrifice two first-round and two third-round picks on top of Logan Stankoven to land Mikko Rantanen from the Carolina Hurricanes. Dallas has no first or second-round picks at the upcoming draft, while the Canadiens have two in each of those rounds. If they’d like a roster player to patch up the hole in their current lineup for the year, could they consider taking another left-winger in Laine? It would be surprising, but it wouldn’t hurt to ask.
