While Montreal Canadiens' captain Nick Suzuki had a bit of a slow start to the year (the first two games), he's now firing on all cylinders. In fact, he's had a point in his last seven games, racking up 11 points over that span.
He became just the fifth play in the Tricolore's history to record four seven-game point streaks at age 25 or younger. The other Habs to accomplish the feat were elite sniper Steve Shut (six times), Guy Lafleur (six times), Shayne Corson (four times), and Bernie "Boom-Boom" Geoffrion (four times).
Last night's game was also his 74th career multi-point game at age 25 or younger, which ties him up with Maurice Richard and leaves him two games short of Jean Beliveau. The player who sits atop that ranking is Guy Lafleur, with 161 games, followed by Shutt with 102, Henri Richard at 99, Stephane Richer with 91, Geoffrion at 83, and Mario Tremblay with 80.
Suzuki will turn 26 next August, meaning he still has 73 games to go to climb that ranking. Where do you see him climbing? Even if he had multiple points in all games until the end of the season, he would still trade Lafleur by 14 games. He only needs 28 games of two or more points to tie Shutt with 102, and that doesn't seem like too much to ask, considering his production rate right now.
That's the kind of accomplishment that would help the center solidify his status as a "special player," as Ken Dryden told us last week. The NHL really is a league that belongs to young men nowadays. Quinn Hughes is ruling the roost in Vancouver, and Connor Bedard is the new face of the league.
