The hockey world was looking forward to finally finding out the team identity of the six PWHL franchise yesterday morning and at 8:42 AM ET, the announcement came live on TV in both Canada and the USA.
Nathalie Spooner appeared on Breakfast Time in Canada to introduce the Toronto Scepters before the name and logos of the five other franchise were announced. The Ottawa Charge, the Minnesota Frost, the Boston Fleet, the New York Sirens and the Montreal Victoire will complete the PWHL roster for this upcoming season.
The Montreal Canadiens wasted no time in welcoming the Victoire to town, posting a photo of Alex Newhook showing the team's logo on his phone.
The Canadiens' organization has been a strong supporter of women's hockey in the city for years. In 2015, the Montreal Stars of the Canadian Women Hockey League were rebranded the Montreal Canadiennes and the Habs provided financial support and worked alongside the team in marketing and community initiatives.
Then, last season, when the PWHL was established, the Montreal team started playing at the Centre 2102 in Verdun, but were soon allowed to play at la Place Bell, the Laval Rocket's home arena. Later in the season, the team got to play at the Bell Centre for one game and the arena was filled to the rafters to watch the locals take on PWHL Toronto and establish a world record crowd for a women's hockey game.
The Canadiens also welcomed some of the PWHL players when they held the team's skills' competition last February and it was announced recently that the Victoire would be playing most of its games at the Place Bell this season, which wouldn't have been possible without the support of the Canadiens' organization.
