I think there are seven names out there. One or all of them can be traded. Jake Evans, Scott Laughton, Christian Dvorak, Alex Tuch, Quinton Byfield, Brayden Schenn and Brock Nelson. I list all of these players because the Canadiens can either sit back and wait, or strike while the iron is hot.
I think trading Evans makes sense and I think he has a wide appeal because of his style of play and salary. He is a pure rental and I know the school of thought is that those players can wait until the last minute, to see where the Canadiens fall in the playoff race, along with other bubble teams, and to see if a team gets desperate. The problem is March 7th is almost here and a fair amount of trades have already occurred.
Evans needs to go before the Flyers' Scott Laughton. Both have reasonable salaries but Laughton has an additional year of salary. Some teams may covet that extra year but many like pure rentals. I think you can talk a team into Evans over Laughton because the Flyers are asking for more of a return and because Evans has no strings unless the organization tries to bundle him and Joel Armia.
Dvorak is a tough player to move and fans can’t be upset if that doesn’t materialize. I feel like if it does it might be part of a three-way deal so the salary can become palatable for the team that gets him. Those deals happen but they take a long time to put together and time is starting to get thin.
