The newly-named CN Sports Complex in Brossard, QC will be buzzing with activity once again next week. Wednesday, September 13th marks the start of the Montreal Canadiens' 2023 rookie camp, for which they have released the list of players invited by the organization to participate.
Among the 27 young men making up the roster are 15 forwards, nine defenseman, and three goaltenders. Notable prospects such as Owen Beck, Sean Farrell, Emil Heineman, Logan Mailloux, and Jayden Struble will attend, as well as names from this year's draft, like David Reinbacher, Florian Xhekaj, and Jacob Fowler. In addition, forward Isaac Dufort, defenseman Stanislav Demin, and goaltender Jan Spunar will take part on a tryout basis. You'll find the full roster listed below.
One name fans might be surprised to see on the list is Ty Smilanic, acquired from Florida in February as part of the Ben Chiarot trade. After spending the past two seasons as a member of the men's hockey team at Quinnipiac University (NCAA), Smilanic transferred to Wisconsin in May.
NCAA players are not permitted to participate in fall NHL camps, but according to a report by Radio-Canada's Marc Antoine Godin, the young forward "has decided to leave Wisconsin and will attend rookie camp (and hopefully the main camp) with the hopes of landing a pro contract."
As was the case for July's development camp, Laval Rocket head coach Jean-Francois Houle, along with assistant coaches Kelly Buchberger, Martin Laperriere, and Marco Marciano, will manage coaching duties for the entirety of rookie camp.
The opening day of camp will comprise off-ice activities, such as medical and physical examinations, before the group journeys to Buffalo to take part in the 2023 Prospects Challenge (all times Eastern, all games held at LECOM HarborCenter in Buffalo, NY.)
