Mike Matheson has one more year after this year with a reasonable cap hit if they can but he has another bonus. At that point, I think this could happen if the team Canadiens come to an agreement about retention with the new club.
Because Montreal is close to the cap, this deal would have to occur after another deal. At least one high salaried player would have to come off the books first.
Matheson is a decent offensive defenseman who can run a power play and they always have value. He's currently on pace for 36 points but he could do better than that on a contender. At 30, he would be sought after and the Canadiens have young defensemen who could fill this role.
Matheson averages over 24 minutes of ice time a game. He has 10 points on the power play and 13 points at 5-on-5, that's a pretty good split. Some fans would like him to go so this would be good for those folks too.
His 109 blocks add value. So what might he be worth on the trade market? After retention at least a second round pick. Why might they do it? For the future cap savings and the fact that they would be creating a roster spot for a younger defenseman.
David Savard will go first. There's no doubt about that but this one could be a last minute decision. A former team like the Florida Panthers might have interest in his as an example and I could see a few others feeling the same way come March 7th.
