After defeating the Toronto Marlies in preseason action on Thursday, the Laval Rocket made their first round of roster cuts.

Excerpt from 'Habs Hockey Report' of host Amy Johnson commenting on the unique approaches of NHL teams when determining development paths for hockey prospects.

Just four days after opening their 2023 training camp, the Laval Rocket announced their first slate of roster cuts on Friday afternoon. Four forwards and five defenseman were either released or assigned to the Trois-Rivieres Lions in the ECHL.

The cuts came just 24 hours after the team had completed their first of two preseason games. On the road, the Rocket downed the Toronto Marlies Thursday afternoon by a score of 3-1.

Nathan Legare scored a goal, and Jared Davidson tallied two of his own. Riley Kidney had an assist on all three goals, Miguel Tourigny registered two assists, and Jan Mysak had one assist on the day. Jakub Dobes and Strauss Mann split goaltending duties, with the lone Toronto goal coming late in the second period when Mann was minding the crease.

Players released from Laval's camp include:

Forwards:

  • Isaac Dufort
  • Ty Smilanic
  • Alex-Olivier Voyer
  • Nolan Yaremko

Defensemen:

  • Stanislav Demin
  • Eric Hjorth
  • Noah Laaouan
  • Andrew Nielson
  • Christopher Merisier-Ortiz

Probably the most notable cut is that of Ty Smilanic, acquired from Florida in February as part of the deal that sent Ben Chiarot to the Panthers. After playing in the NCAA for Quinnipiac University for two years, Smilanic transferred to the University of Wisconsin in the fall of 2022.

Slated to return to Wisconsin this fall for his fourth year in college hockey, he surprised many by appearing on Montreal's roster for their rookie camp and training camp last month. According to reports, Smilanic had decided to leave the NCAA in the hopes of earning himself a professional contract.

The 21-year-old Colorado native was among almost 30 players cut from the Canadiens' camp on September 30th. His release from Laval's training camp now leaves him without a contract for the upcoming season.
