With the NHL Entry Draft right around the corner, and free agency hot on its heels, player movement and contract talks have really begun to heat up.

In the past five days, the Laval Rocket have signed three players to returning contracts: Olivier Galipeau, Riley McKay, and John Parker-Jones. All three skaters split time last season between Laval and the Trois-Rivieres Lions (ECHL), but have now received one-year, one-way AHL deals entering the 2023-24 season.

The hockey community's eyes have been locked on the Stanley Cup Final series between the Florida Panthers and Vegas Golden Knights, but the AHL's Calder Cup Final is bringing plenty of drama in its own manner.

In its inaugural season, the Coachella Valley Firebirds franchise finds itself fighting for a championship with the league's oldest team, the Hershey Bears. The Firebirds, the AHL affiliate of the Seattle Kraken, are coached by Dan Bylsma and kicked off the series with back-to-back shutouts on home ice. Now, with the series coming to Pennsylvania for games three, four, and five (if necessary), Todd Nelson's Bears are faced with their toughest test of the season. Are they up to the task?

Speaking of prominent American League coaches, Mitch Love has helmed the Calgary Wranglers, winning top honors as the best coach in the AHL for two consecutive seasons. With a new head coach behind the bench for their NHL parent club, the Calgary Flames, will Love find himself promoted to an assistant's position next to Ryan Huska? Or could another organization have him on their radar?
