After players are drafted, determining the best path for them to take to the NHL isn't always a clear decision. Sometimes the choice is a gamble, other times it's obvious.

Excerpt from 'Habs Hockey Report' of host Amy Johnson commenting on the unique approaches of NHL teams when determining development paths for hockey prospects.

Earlier this week, you might have read my feature article titled 'Should Canadiens' Slafkovsky Spend Time In Laval?' here on The Hockey News - Montreal. In it, I detailed the pros and cons of starting Slafkovsky's career with the Canadiens in the NHL, and detailed reasons why I, among others in hockey media, believe he could benefit from a short stint in the AHL this season.

Today I've decided to expand on that topic a bit and discuss development ideology overall, and try to illustrate how difficult it can sometimes be to predict exactly what development formula is right for each individual prospect.

For the Montreal Canadiens, that means looking again at Slafkovsky, but also the early path chosen for young defenseman David Reinbacher. Granted, while it's my belief that Slafkovsky would benefit from a bit of time in Laval, I'm also completely aware that the likelihood of him being sent down to the AHL is extremely slim. But it's still something worth exploring in conversation, yes?
