NHL columnist Michael Traikos joins the Canadiens Connection podcast to discuss how the Canadiens rebuild could reignite the historic Habs - Leafs rivalry in the coming years.
The Montreal Canadiens open the 2023-24 season against the Maple Leafs in Toronto on October 11th once again pitting two historic rivals against each other. The two teams may be on different paths in their journey towards the Stanley Cup but could the rebuild of the Canadiens restore the passion of the rivalry? The Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs are the NHL's two oldest teams and their rivalry is one of the greatest in all of sports. Fans of these two Original Six franchises can be found in numbers in every city in Canada and around the planet.
The two teams have met in 16 Stanley Cup playoff series. The Canadiens have won nine of those series, including the last one 2021. The Canadiens have won 24 Stanley Cups; the Maple Leafs have won 13, the top two teams in that category.
The rivalry is important to the NHL and important to the cultural fabric of Canada.
