Canadiens Youth Take First Crack At Preseason Competition

Amidst the sounds, the sights, and the accompanying nerves under the Bell Centre lights on Monday night, Montreal's prospects had to focus on being their best.

If the annual Red vs White intrasquad scrimmage held at the Bell Centre on Sunday afternoon was the preseason appetizer, Monday night's opener against the New Jersey Devils really gave team Montreal Canadiens management something to sink their teeth into.

Plenty of young hockey prospects found themselves in the lineup for their first game with a CH proudly emblazoned across their chest. Would emotions get the best of them? For some, it had an effect, whereas others seemed better prepared to rise to the challenge and get to work.

It's only the first exhibition game of the season, so naturally lots of leeway will be given when analyzing this initial performance, but there were some definitive highs and lows to take away as well. Players like Owen Beck, Logan Mailloux, and Joshua Roy displayed a lot of positives, while there were others who struggled more noticeably.

On this week's episode of The Press Zone podcast, we'll take a closer look at the first game out of the gate and discuss which prospects seemed to flourish, and which ones showed some weaknesses.

Plus, as personnel evaluations begin in earnest, we can expect the Habs to soon make their next round of cuts. Those decisions will help to shape the roster for Laval's training camp, which begins on Monday, September 25th.

To explore these topics further, we invite you to listen to the latest edition of The Press Zone podcast, hosted by Amy Johnson. She's joined in the studio this week by AHL reporter Patrick Williams for a new edition of the "AHL Hot Stove" segment, where they examine Michael Andlauer's purchase of the Belleville Senators and explore what that ownership change could mean for one of the Rocket's most fierce North Division rivals.

This weekly show provides Habs fans with the latest news, analysis, and commentary regarding the Laval Rocket, Canadiens prospects, and American Hockey League news.
