The league's general managers gathered for their annual three-day meetings in Florida to discuss and debate potential changes to rules and regulations.

Excerpt from 'Habs Hockey Report' of host Amy Johnson commenting on proposed changes to the NHL's three-on-three overtime structure.

Every spring, along with the tens of thousands of sun-seekers who flock to the warm climate of the southern United States, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and the league's general managers head to Florida for their annual three-day meetings.

Some years, the news coming out of these meetings creates a firestorm with fans and media around the league. This year's topics of discussion, however, didn't contain any bombshell revelations. NHL Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell even admitted, "These aren't exciting changes." But just because they're maybe not "exciting" doesn't mean that they're not interesting.

One of the biggest questions heading into the meetings was whether or not the GMs would follow through on speculation that they were going to make changes to the format or structure of three-on-three overtime. In the end, they decided to keep overtime in the NHL the same for now, citing observations and analysis illustrating that players regrouping in their own zone didn't take away from the overall product.

That meant that the bulk of rule changes or updates proposed at this year's meetings were a little more low-key. Some focused on goaltenders, while others concentrated on expansion of coach's challenges.

In this week's episode of Habs Hockey Report I picked out six proposed updates from the 2024 NHL GMs meetings to highlight, all of which still need to go through official offseason approval processes before they're implemented in any games.
