Over the course of the past week, the Montreal Canadiens made two announcements with significant impact to the organization.
How is it possible that over a span of one week, the Montreal Canadiens could release two different announcements which perfectly illustrate the highs and lows of the rollercoaster Habs fans have been riding over the past couple of years?
Well, that's exactly what happened this past week when the Canadiens announced that Alex Newhook would miss 10-12 weeks of time due to a high-ankle sprain while then releasing the news that goaltender Sam Montembeault had been inked to a three-year contract extension.
Montreal Canadiens goaltender Samuel MontembeaultFun news at one turn, devastating news at the next. Seems to be the story of the season, year, or past few years for the Canadiens.
I don't know about you, but I'm getting an eerily familiar feeling from the injuries already plaguing the team this early in the season. Losing Newhook for this amount of time, on the heels of losing Dach for the whole season, also isn't ideal for the youth on the roster and for the forward progress of the rebuild.
Then there's the situation in the crease, which has probably dragged on longer than even Kent Hughes or Jeff Gorton expected it to. With three goaltenders, and plans needing to be made for what the netminding situation is going to look like in the upcoming couple of years, was this the right moment to attached a shiny new contract to Montembeault?
