We're just about two weeks away from the 2024 NHL trade deadline. Can you feel the anticipation starting to build around the league? Kent Hughes already has made his first big move of the year, when he shipped out forward Sean Monahan to the Winnipeg Jets and got a first-round draft pick back in exchange.
But before we sit down to consider what additional moves Hughes could realistically make on or before March 8th, perhaps we should take a moment to think back to this time a year ago and remember which players were projected to move at the deadline, and revisit the actual trades Montreal general manager made.
Former Montreal Canadiens forward Evgenii DadonovArguably, the Canadiens were much quieter at last year's trade deadline than a lot of fans and media members expected (or wanted) them to be. Instead of moving key pieces like Monahan, or Joel Edmundson, or even finding some kind of return for Jonathan Drouin, Hughes instead made one single NHL-level player move. He traded Evgeny Dadonov to the Dallas Stars in return for Denis Gurianov.
On this week's episode of Habs Hockey Report, I run down the list of players who could have been moved last year and assess whether or not them staying or going was a good thing for the Habs. Plus, I offer a "hindsight grade" on the overall performance of Hughes in terms of last year's trade deadline, and I walk you through each of three moves he did make, including that Dadonov trade.
