This week, the Laval Rocket announced the signing of the veteran Finnish goaltender to an AHL professional tryout contract.
Last week found the Laval Rocket out on the road once again, embarking on the first two legs of their three-city trip. Against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in Allentown, PA, Jakub Dobes stole the show, and two points, for Laval when he backstopped the team to a 4-3 victory. Stopping 42 of 45 shots against, Dobes undeniably stole the game for the Rocket, who didn't look to be the stronger team on the ice.
The next night was another goaltending story, as the team traveled to face the Hershey Bears, defending Calder Cup champions. In this matchup, and since Dobes had made three consecutive starts, it was Strauss Mann in the crease for Laval. The entire team was dominated from start to finish, with a demoralizing final score of 7-1.
Not surprisingly, the Rocket announced this week that veteran netminder Kasimir Kaskisuo had been signed to a PTO with Laval. The 30-year-old Finnish goaltender has spent the past two seasons playing for Leksand in the SHL, but prior to that had plenty of years of experience in the AHL playing for the Toronto Marlies.
So who is Kaskisuo, and how can he help Laval at this juncture? And what does his appearance mean for rookie prospect Dobes and his development?
