With a barren center market driving values to new heights, Nashville could flip their veteran sniper for a massive haul of assets to accelerate their youth movement.

With the NHL free agent market officially opening today, the Nashville Predators find themselves holding a massive chip in Steven Stamkos.

This summer’s unrestricted free agent class is notoriously weak down the middle, with Boone Jenner standing as the top center available on the open market. Because of that, newly hired general manager Chris MacFarland could look to cash in on Stamkos while his value is at an absolute premium.

Stamkos is entering the third year of the four-year contract he signed with Nashville in 2024. He is coming off another productive season, remaining one of the league's premier power-play weapons.

However, the Predators are currently caught in a weird middle ground between competing and retooling. The roster that was once aging is now becoming younger quickly.

Trading a marquee name like Stamkos on July 1 would be a stunning move, but the return could be good, especially with how depleted the center market is. Desperate teams with plenty of cap space are looking at a barren center market and might be willing to overpay significantly for a proven winner.

Moving Stamkos would allow Nashville to inject high-end young assets into their system and completely reset their financial flexibility for the future.
