Predators Plus/Minus: Nashville Downs Winnipeg in 4-2 Statement Win

There was a lot to like about the Nashville Predators' 4-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday at Canada Life Centre.

From top to bottom, Nashville's lineup dominated their Central Division rivals in an important matchup that saw the Predators improve to 11-0-2 in their last 13 games and 38-25-4 on the season.

“We knew it was going to be a big game,” Predators captain Roman Josi said. “They're one of the best teams in the league and I felt like we played a really good game for 60 minutes. I felt like in the beginning they had a couple good chances. But after that, I felt like we played fast, we were relentless and didn't give them much time. It was just a great game for us.”

    The Point Streak Lives On

The Predators are 11-0-2 in their last 13 games; they have outscored their opponents 53-26 over that stretch.

    Winnipeg Revenge Tour

Nashville entered Wednesday's game with 78 points on the season, nine fewer than Winnipeg's 87. With the win, the Predators earned an important two points in the standings to close the gap between them and one of the top teams in the Western Conference.

Winnipeg has also dominated Central Division opponents this season, entering Wednesday's game with a 16-4-1 record against their division rivals. In fact, the last time the Jets lost to a Central Division team in regulation this season was a 3-2 decision in Nashville on Nov. 26.

The Jets are also one of the NHL's best teams on home ice this season, having gone 22-8-2 in contests at Canada Life Centre prior to the matchup with the Predators. The last time the Predators visited Winnipeg on Nov. 9, Nashville suffered a brutal 6-3 loss as part of a road trip on which they went 1-4-0 and saw their overall record fall to 5-8-0 on the season.

    The Captain is On Fire

Josi assisted on Nashville's first two goals in the first period, beginning with a beautiful stretch pass to Gustav Nyquist, who opened the scoring at 6:38 of the first period.

Josi also assisted on Kiefer Sherwood's goal later in the period to give him 50 assists on the season. It's the second time in his career that he has reached the 50-assist mark; Paul Kariya is the only other player in Predators history to accomplish the feat (54 assists in 2005-06 and 52 assists in 2006-07).

Per NHL PR, Josi also became the fifth active defenseman with 100 career multi-assist games, joining Erik Karlsson (150) and Kris Letang (105) of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Victor Hedman (103) of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Brent Burns (101) of the Carolina Hurricanes.

    The Gus Bus Keeps Rolling

In addition to the opening goal in the first period, Nyquist added an assist on Filip Forsberg's goal in the third, hitting hit him with a between-the-legs drop pass for his second point of the night.

Nyquist's 58 points (18 goals, 40 assists) on the season are just three shy of his career high of 61, set in 2018-19 with the Detroit Red Wings and San Jose Sharks.

    Kiefer Sure Would

With a goal in the first period, Sherwood recorded his third point in as many games. Josi carried the puck into the Winnipeg zone and passed it to Sherwood, who scored with a wrist shot from the top of the slot at 14:32 to extend Nashville's lead to 2-0.

Sherwood also scored the opening goal in Nashville's 2-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on March 9 and recorded an assist in the Predators' 4-3 overtime loss to the Minnesota Wild on March 10.

Apple Juice Wins the Goalie Battle

Juuse Saros made 28 saves between the pipes for the Predators. He also played the puck behind the net and fed it to Josi to record a secondary assist on Nyquist's goal in the first period.

Saros is 8-0-2 in his last 10 starts, allowing 20 total goals during that span. With the win over Winnipeg, he improved to 28-21-4 on the season.

    Welcome to Nashville, Jason Zucker

A mere 22 seconds after Forsberg's goal in the second period, Jason Zucker backhanded a rebound over Winnipeg goalie Connor Hellebuyck’s pad. It was Zucker's first goal in three games with the Predators since being traded from the Arizona Coyotes on March 8.

Zucker is skating in his 13th career NHL season and had 25 points (9g-16a) in 51 games with the Coyotes in 2023-24 prior to being traded to Nashville.

    Lauzon Sets a Franchise Record

Jeremy Lauzon led all skaters on both teams with six hits, giving him 321 total to set a new franchise record for the most in a single season. He broke the previous record of 318 set by Tanner Jeannot in 2021-22.

Lauzon is now 62 hits away from the most in an NHL season. The NHL single-season record is currently held by Matt Martin, who had 382 hits for the New York Islanders in 2014-15.

    Stastney Leaves with Apparent Injury

Defenseman Spencer Stastney, skating in his first game with Nashville since being recalled from the American Hockey League's Milwaukee Admirals on March 12, left the game late in the third period with an undisclosed injury.

Stastney took a hit from Jets forward Vladislav Namestnikov in the corner and appeared to be holding his shoulder as he exited to the locker room.
