NEWARK, N.J. -- Goaltender Jonathan Bernier has announced his retirement from the National Hockey League.
On Monday, Aug. 21, the 35-year-old posted the news on his Instagram page.
"After fourteen years, it's time for me to hang up the pads. I can't thank the Los Angeles Kings, Toronto Maple Leafs, Anaheim Ducks, Colorado Avalanche, Detroit Red Wings, and New Jersey Devils enough for giving me the opportunity to play in the best league in the world and in front of the best fans in the game. There are no words to express my gratitude to everyone who has been part of my hockey journey since day one. Without all of you, I couldn't have done it. To my lovely wife, kids, and family, thank you for always being by my side through the ups and downs. You have always supported me and helped me achieve my childhood dream and be my biggest fans. Now I'm heading into the next chapter of life - retirement."
The Devils signed Bernier to a two-year, $8.25 million contract on July 28, 2021. He only appeared in 10 games during the 2021-22 season, earning a record of 4-4-1. His last NHL game was played on Dec. 3, 2021, versus the Winnipeg Jets at Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg. Bernier allowed six goals in the first two periods and was eventually pulled in favor of Mackenzie Blackwood.
A few days later, the Laval, Quebec native was placed on injured reserve for a hip injury, and in early 2022, Bernier underwent hip surgery that would keep him off the ice for the entire 2022-23 campaign.
In 404 career regular-season games, Bernier earned a record of 165-163-40 with 18 shutouts, a 2.78 GAA, and a .912 save percentage. He won a Stanley Cup with the Kings in 2012, serving as Jonathan Quick's goaltending partner.
According to his wife's Instagram page, the couple now resides in Naples, Florida, with their three children, Tyler, Brady, and Ivy.
