New Jersey Devils goalie Jake Allen is the club's most notable pending unrestricted free agent (UFA) with the start of free agency just about here. The 34-year-old is certainly in a great spot right now, as he is the best goalie who can become a UFA this summer. Thus, he would likely have plenty of suitors if he decides to test the market.
However, based on a recent report, it appears that Allen has not shut the door on the possibility of staying in New Jersey.
According to The Athletic's Peter Baugh, the Devils and Allen are still having contract talks with July 1 just about here.
Hearing that the Devils are still hoping to re-sign Allen is not surprising in the slightest. The veteran goaltender was effective as their backup this campaign, as he posted a .908 save percentage and a 2.66 goals-against average in 31 appearances.
If the Devils were to re-sign Allen, he would once again form a strong tandem with Devils starting goalie Jacob Markstrom. Thus, it is understandable that they are still trying to get a deal done with Allen. Furthermore, it would not be easy for the Devils to find a replacement as his skill level, as this year's UFA goalie market is not the greatest.
It will be interesting to see if the Devils and Allen end up coming to terms on a new contract before the start of free agency from here. If he hits the market, he will be a very popular target.
