Meet the Player the Devils Could Have Picked in the First-Round Had They Not Traded It Away

On Feb. 26, New Jersey Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald got his man. He worked out a deal with San Jose Sharks general manager Mike Grier that sent Timo Meier to New Jersey for a return that included four players and three draft picks. One  of those picks was the Devils' first-round draft selection in a very deep 2023 draft class.

With that 26th overall selection, the Sharks selected Quentin Musty from the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

EliteProspects 2023 NHL Draft Guide: He brings a little bit of everything to the table and does so in a projectable, imposing 6-foot- 2 frame. Better still, he’s not shy about leveraging every part of it to dispossess opponents of the puck, wreak havoc along the boards and at the net-front, and to barrel down the wing off the rush. His vision is top-notch, and he’s equipped with the cunning and passing skill necessary to connect with layered feeds around skates and sticks.

The Hamburg, New York native was the first overall pick in the 2021 OHL Draft. He is a left winger and collected 78 points in 53 games with the Wolves last season. His 52 assists were ranked first on his team, while his 26 goals and 78 points were second-best behind David Goyette. The 17-year-old recorded an 18-game point streak from Oct. 29 through Dec. 28, totaling 35 points (seven goals, 28 assists) in that span.

After he was selected, Musty met with the media and spoke about what the rest of his summer looks like and what the next step is in his development.

"Go back home in the summer, everyday training and trying to get better," he said. "Honestly getting ready for the NHL is the next step for me. I think just take my game to the next level next year and hopefully have a crack at the NHL soon."
