COLUMBUS, O.H. -- New Jersey Devils captain Nico Hischier laced up his skates and glided onto the ice at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, in front of 18,172 hockey fans on Saturday night.
He skated on a line with Ondrej Palat to his left and Timo Meier to his right. At the start of the game, Hischier was sitting at 298 career NHL points.
The Swiss center collected his 299th point with a little over five minutes remaining in the middle frame. He earned the secondary assist on Jack Hughes' 100th career NHL goal.
Entering the third period, the Devils had secured a 4-2 lead. Less than three minutes into the final frame, Hischier found himself in the offensive zone while his teammates executed a line change. Jesper Bratt gained possession of the puck at Columbus' blue line and skated toward the opposing net. He found Hischier and passed him the puck.
The 24-year-old's slap shot got past Blue Jackets goaltender Daniil Tarasov. It was Hischier's seventh goal of the 2023-24 season and his 300th career NHL point.
The first-overall pick from 2017 entered Saturday's game with 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in 17 games versus Columbus, including two assists in his last meeting on April 6, 2023. He now has four points over his previous two games versus their Metropolitan Division rival.
Hischier's father, Rino, was in the building as the Devils are hosting their yearly dad/mentors' trip this weekend.
"It's good to have them here," Hischier said. "It's good that we performed for them and got that win. Tomorrow, we will try (to do) the same."
Per the media notes, he is now one of 21 skaters all-time in franchise history who earned 300 or more career points with the organization. Additionally, he is the sixth Switzerland native all-time who earned 300 or more career NHL points.
