NEWARK, N.J. -- The New Jersey Devils trimmed their training camp roster down to 42 (seven goaltenders, 12 defensemen, and 23 forwards) on Friday, Sept. 29.

Returned to Juniors

Josh Filmon, 19, will return to the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League. He scored one goal at the 2023 Prospects Challenge in Buffalo, NY, and played alongside Justin Dowling and Brian Halonen during the team's scrimmages and practices. The winger appeared in one preseason game at Prudential Center versus the Philadelphia Flyers. He finished the game with 13:48 of ice time and one hit. Additionally, he drew a penalty in the third period when Flyers' defenseman Cam York was called for roughing.

Assigned to Utica Comets (American Hockey League)

Forwards: Filip Engaras, T.J. Friedmann, Joe Gambardella, Timur Ibragimov, Xavier Parent, Ryan Schmelzer

Defensemen: Colin Felix, Will MacKinnon, Robbie Russo, Topias Vilen

Goaltender: Tyler Brennan

  • Engaras, Friedmann, Ibragimov, Parent, Felix, MacKinnon, Russo, and Brennan did not appear in a preseason game for New Jersey.
  • Gambardella scored a goal in the Devils preseason game versus the Montreal Canadiens on Sept. 25.
  • MacKinnon had a strong showing at the 2023 Prospects Challenge in Buffalo, NY, with three assists. He spent most of the camp playing alongside Felix, his teammate last season on the Reading Royals, an affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers.

Placed on Waivers

Defenseman: Tyler Wotherspoon

Wotherspoon signed a professional tryout contract with the Devils on Sept. 14, 2021. He participated in training camp and preseason but was released from his tryout and subsequently signed a one-year deal with the Comets on Oct. 13, 2021.

The blueliner was recalled to the Devils last season but did not appear in a game. He earned 21 points (four goals, 17 assists) in 65 games with the Comets, spending his time playing with Simon Nemec.

As MSGN play-by-play announcer Bill Spaulding stated, "There are only 11 waiver-exempt players left on New Jersey's roster: Alexander Holtz, Luke Hughes, Akira Schmid, Chase Stillman, Graeme Clarke, Brian Halonen, Simon Nemec, Daniil Misyul, Michael Vukojevic, Nico Daws, and Isaac Poulter. "
