NEWARK, N.J. -- Ahead of the New Jersey Devils practice on Tuesday, the organization announced they recalled forward Shane Bowers from the Utica Comets (American Hockey League).

Graeme Clarke, 22, made his NHL debut on Jan. 6 versus the Vancouver Canucks, after being recalled on Jan. 3. He was reassigned to the Comets the following day on Jan. 7.

Bowers is two years older than Clarke and has seven points (six goals, one assist) in 29 games with the Comets this season. Regarding point production, the 22-year-old has the clear edge, but head coach Lindy Ruff provided two other reasons when asked about Bowers' call-up.

"(He has) good speed," Ruff said. "I think with the lineup we've got, we're missing quite a bit of speed, and both him and Max (Willman) bring speed down the lineup. (Bowers) has been a real good penalty killer down (in Utica). (Comets head coach) Kevin (Dineen) has raved about his penalty killing, so maybe that can take a little bit of the load off a guy like Hischier."

After Tuesday's practice, team reporter Catherine Bogart asked Bowers what he has learned about the Devils organization since he was acquired on June 26, 2023.

"Obviously, the Devils are a fast team, and I think this system is kind of built off playing with speed and playing fast. We've been trying to do a lot of that down in Utica," he said. "I'm just trying to implement that into my game."

The Devils acquired Bowers in a trade that sent defenseman Reilly Walsh to the Boston Bruins organization. It marked the third time Bowers was involved in a trade with a current or former Devils player.

In Nov. 2017, he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche by the Ottawa Senators along with ex-Devils goaltender Andrew Hammond. Years later, in Feb. 2023, he was traded from Colorado to Boston for netminder Keith Kinkaid.

A 28th overall selection by the Senators in 2017, Bowers made his NHL debut as a member of the Avalanche. On Nov. 10, 2022, he suited up against the Nashville Predators but sustained an injury and had to leave the game after less than two minutes of ice time.
