NEWARK, N.J. -- It's the end of an era in New Jersey. Damon Severson, the team's longest-tenured player, has officially been traded, marking the organization's first big roster move of the offseason.

Here's a wrap-up of all the latest Devils' news and notes as the team continues their stay in Buffalo for the NHL Scouting Combine and prepares for the NHL Entry Draft.

    New Jersey Devils Headlines

    - Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald pulled off the second sign-and-trade in NHL history when he inked Severson to an eight-year contract worth $50 million and traded him to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

"I was part of (the rebuild) in New Jersey, and now I have a chance to go to Columbus and hopefully be able to be a huge piece of the Blue Jackets organization, trying to pull the right strings there and get everything together to be where you want it to be," he said during his Blue Jackets media availability on June 9.

    Updates on Contract Negotiations

Even though we are amid the Stanley Cup Final, teams are wasting no time trading for assets and re-signing players. Andreas Athanasiou signed a two-year contract to remain with the Chicago Blackhawks, and the Buffalo Sabres re-signed Kyle Okposo. This past week, I checked in with a few agents to find out the status of negotiations. Let's dive in.

    - As Mike Zeisberger of NHL.com reported, contract talks with Timo Meier's agent, Claude Lemieux, were slated to begin this week.

    - Ryan Novozinsky of the Star-Ledger/NJ.com reported that Jesper Bratt's agent, Joakim Persson, and Fitzgerald are "talking and in communication."

    - Kevin Bahl's agent, David Gagner, confirmed via a phone call that he and  Fitzgerald are engaging in preliminary talks. The 6-foot-6 defenseman is a restricted free agent.

    - Peter Fish, the agent for Miles Wood, confirmed via text message that there has been no communication with Fitzgerald as of June 8. When asked if he believes there is interest from the Devils or if he and Miles are preparing for free agency, he responded, "I think both."

    - Jesper Boqvist's agent, Peter Wallen, confirmed over the phone that as of June 5, there has been no communication with Fitzgerald and the Devils. Like Bahl, 24-year-old Boqvist is a restricted free agent.

    Around the Metropolitan Division

    - The Columbus Blue Jackets had a busy week. In addition to acquiring Severson, the organization traded for former Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov. My colleague, Jason Newland, breaks down the details of the acquisition.

    - Lou Lamoriello finally addressed the New York Islanders media. The general manager spoke about wanting ex-Devil Zach Parise to return next season. Stefen Rosner has the full report, including why the Islanders need him in their lineup.

    - Another week has passed, and the New York Rangers still have no head coach.  Jonny Lazarus gives his take on what could be taking Rangers' general manager Chris Drury so long to decide.

-Will the Philadelphia Flyers move on from goaltender Carter Hart? There is speculation after general manager Danny Briere told the media he is "open for business."

    - According to my colleague, Nick Horwat, the Penguins will not hire a general manager anytime soon. Early reports indicated that New Jersey's assistant GM Dan MacKinnon is a candidate for the job.

    - Washington Capitals reporter Sammi Silber wrote a fantastic article breaking down the art of fighting with input from Garnet Hathaway and Beck Malenstyn.
